Frequently Asked Questions About Scleral Lenses (Part 1)

Scleral lenses are becoming more popular, and we hear many great questions from patients. Here are answers to some of the most common ones:

Can scleral lenses be colored?
Yes. While most scleral lenses are clear, cosmetic or handling tints can be added in certain cases. These do not change eye color like cosmetic soft lenses but may help with lens handling.

Can scleral lenses be stored dry?
Yes. Many scleral lenses can be stored dry for long-term storage if they do not have specialty coatings such as Hydra-PEG. Before dry storage, lenses must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected—often using a hydrogen peroxide system—then allowed to completely air dry before being placed in a clean, dry case.

Can scleral lenses damage your eyes?
When properly fitted and cared for, scleral lenses are very safe. Issues are most often related to improper fit, poor hygiene, or missed follow-up visits.

Can scleral lenses be multifocal?
Yes. Multifocal scleral lenses are available and can help patients who need both distance and near vision correction.

Do scleral lenses have a prescription?
Absolutely. Scleral lenses are custom medical devices with a prescription tailored to the unique shape and needs of each eye.

Can scleral lenses make keratoconus worse?
No. Scleral lenses do not worsen keratoconus. They are commonly used to improve vision, comfort, and corneal protection.
